Communication Self-Assessment for 9th Graders
Rate yourself on a scale of 1–5 for each statement, where:
1 = Yikes. I am really not good at this.
2 = Not horrible, but definitely not great.
3 = Right in the middle.
4 = Feeling pretty solid.
5 = I’m great at this.
Verbal Communication
- I speak clearly and at an appropriate volume.
- I can explain complex ideas in simple terms.
- I use appropriate language for different situations (formal vs. informal).
- I feel confident when speaking in front of a group.
- I can engage in small talk comfortably.
Listening Skills

- I know how to communicate professionally in online settings.
- I can effectively collaborate with others using digital tools.
- I understand the importance of online privacy and security.
Emotional Intelligence
- I can express my feelings clearly and appropriately.
- I’m able to manage my emotions during difficult conversations.
- I can empathize with others’ perspectives and feelings.
- I adapt my communication style based on the other person’s needs.
- I can give and receive constructive feedback gracefully.
Scoring and Interpretation
After completing the survey, add up your total score:
- 120–150 points: Excellent communication skills
- 90–119 points: Good communication skills with room for improvement
- 60–89 points: Average communication skills, significant improvement possible
- 30–59 points: Below average communication skills, focused development needed
