Helping Young Adults Take the Next Step: Why DOing Is Essential to Growth
At Unbound, we train young adults to thrive. But thriving doesn’t happen by accident—and it doesn’t happen just by thinking about what to do next. It takes action. That’s why the second stage in our ADULT model is so important: DO.
If you haven’t already, I encourage you to read or listen to the first stage: ASK. That stage is all about learning to ask better questions and build the questions-based mindset of an intentional adult. But you can’t stop there. Once you start asking the right questions, you have to take the next step. You have to do something.
Why DO Comes Next
Most students think they need clarity before they can take action. But in reality, clarity comes through action. The DO stage is where students get their hands dirty. It’s about experimentation, exploration, and engagement.
Too often, young adults get stuck in their heads. They feel pressure to figure everything out before making a move. But life doesn’t work that way. You learn by trying. You discover what works (and what doesn’t) through experience. And in doing so, you build confidence, competence, and direction.
This is why DO is foundational. When students act, they:
- Gain real-world feedback
- Learn from their failures
- Discover hidden strengths
- Build resilience
- Grow their network
- Identify what excites (or bores) them
Action creates momentum. And momentum builds motivation.

What DO Looks Like in Real Life
So what counts as DOing? It doesn’t have to be dramatic. In fact, small steps are often better than big leaps.
Here are examples of DO in the life of a student:
- Volunteering at a local nonprofit
- Starting a side hustle
- Joining a club or local event
- Working part-time in a new field
- Shadowing a professional they admire
- Tackling a self-led project
- Interviewing someone in a career of interest
These actions don’t just add experience—they create stories. Stories that shape a student’s sense of direction, help them connect dots, and give them something to reflect on during the next ASK cycle.
Why Students Avoid DOing
Despite its value, many students avoid DOing. Why? Because it feels risky.
- What if I fail?
- What if I pick the wrong thing?
- What if I look dumb?
These are valid fears. But they’re also lies.
The truth is: failure is feedback. The only real mistake is not trying. That’s why at Unbound, we coach students to expect and embrace imperfect action.
You’ll never know how something fits until you try it. And even if something doesn’t work, you’ve learned something valuable. You’ve gained experience. You’ve moved forward.
How Unbound Helps Students DO
This is where Unbound shines. Our programs aren’t just about classroom learning or passive content. We’re project-based and community-driven.
That means every student in the Ascend program gets:
- A personal project they plan and execute
- Team challenges that stretch their creativity
- Coaching to help them process what they’re learning
- Mentors who hold them accountable and encourage growth
In other words, students don’t just learn about doing—they actually do it. They gain real-world experience, build resumes, and develop the kind of confidence that only comes from action.
DO Builds the Bridge to the Next Stage
The power of DO is that it creates a feedback loop. Every action generates insight. That insight fuels the next round of asking. And the cycle continues.
When students begin doing, they:
- Test their interests in the real world
- Learn how to solve problems
- Develop practical skills
- Learn what they enjoy and where they excel
Eventually, this leads naturally into the next stage: UNDERSTAND. That’s where students start to recognize patterns in their life and work. They begin to understand how they’re wired, how the world works, and how to connect the two.
But none of that is possible without action. Without DO.
Why DO Matters More Than Ever
In a culture that prizes perfection and performance, DO teaches students to embrace progress and growth. It pushes against the paralysis of analysis. It calls students to courage.
And more importantly, it meets them where they are.
You don’t need a grand vision to start. You just need a willingness to move. To take one step. To try something.
That’s what the DO stage is all about.
Ready to Help a Student Take Action?
If you’re a parent of a student who feels stuck or unsure of their next step, DO might be the answer. Action breaks inertia. It turns questions into momentum. It creates confidence.
And the best part? Your student doesn’t have to do it alone.
Unbound’s Ascend program walks with students through every step of the ADULT framework, including the critical DO stage. They’ll be surrounded by mentors, teammates, and opportunities to take action in ways that are meaningful and growth-oriented.
